
Biography
Naomi Johns is an emerging Australian home grown soprano. Having been praised for “sporting voice and curvaceous charms to lascivious effect” and “[…] filling the auditorium with lyrical warmth and romantic inflection […]” she demonstrates remarkable versatility and substance across both Lyric and Coloratura repertoire. Having attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music after completing her certificate of Music Theatre at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) Naomi joined Opera Australia in their national tour of My Fair Lady and proceeded on to work as occasional part time chorus in between international trips for coaching and development. Naomi has been a frequent finalist of many national singing competitions including The Australian Singing Competition, The Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship, Opera Foundation Australia’s Lady Fairfax Award and was the first female winner of the Bel Canto Award from the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Opera Foundation in 2013 which enabled her to continue her coaching in New York, Cardiff and London. After attending a number of summer schools overseas she debuted the role of Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème for Opera on the Avalon in Canada and attended the George Solti Accademia di bel canto before being called home to Perth.
Since Naomi’s return to Australia, she has made her principal debut with Opera Australia as the opera singer Carlotta Giudicelli in the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production of Phantom of the Opera in 2022 and also made her principal debut with West Australian Opera as Berta in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia in 2021. Pre-Pandemic Naomi covered the role of Madama Cortese in Opera Australia’s award-winning production of Rossinis Il Viaggio a Reims for their Melbourne and Sydney season and was also delighted to join the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) first in 2018 as a soloist for Beethoven 9 with Ascher Fisch and then again in 2020 as a principal for their Last Night of the Proms concert series which was also broadcast on ABC national radio.
Naomi makes her role debut as Desdemona in West Australian Opera’s production of Verdi’s Otello in 2023.
